Glucosamine is an amino sugar the body uses to build cartilage and the glycosaminoglycans that give joint fluid its cushioning properties. Glucosamine sulfate is the most-studied form for knee joint comfort, with the largest body of trial evidence behind it. Glucosamine HCl and N-acetyl glucosamine are structurally similar but have a thinner research base for the same use. It is commonly paired with chondroitin in joint-support products, though the two work on related rather than identical parts of cartilage structure.
