How to Evaluate an All-in-One Supplement
Greens powders, daily scoops and foundational nutrition packs all ask you to trust one label. Here are 5 checks you can run on any of them in about 10 minutes, using nothing but the pouch and a calculator.

What counts as an all-in-one
Greens powders. Daily scoops. Foundational nutrition packs. Multi-ingredient sachets with 40, 60 or 75 things in them. The marketing language changes every couple of years but the shape of the product does not: one purchase, one daily serving, a long ingredient list, and a promise that you can stop thinking about the rest.
That promise is the actual product. Not the powder, the not-thinking. Which is why the honest way to evaluate one is to work out how much thinking it genuinely saves you, and what you are paying per unit of that.
This guide is 5 checks. They work on any product in the category, they take about 10 minutes, and you need nothing except the label and a calculator. We are not going to tell you whether to buy one. We are going to show you how to tell.
A note on what this guide will not do. It will not say what any ingredient does for any health condition, and it will not tell you that you are deficient in anything. Neither of those is a thing a web page can know about you.
Check 1: is there a number next to every ingredient?
Start here, because it decides whether the other 4 checks are even possible.
Turn the pouch over and read down the panel. For each ingredient, you want a number: 400mg, 50 micrograms, or for bacteria, 3 billion CFU, which is the count of live organisms. What you do not want is a group heading with one combined weight and a list of names underneath it.
The proprietary blend: A label that says "Greens Blend 2,400mg" followed by 12 ingredient names is telling you those 12 add up to 2,400mg. It is not telling you the split. It could be 2,300mg of the cheapest ingredient and 100mg shared between the other 11. The manufacturer knows. You cannot find out. Blends like this are common on United States labels, where they are legal.
The UK and EU version of the problem: British and European labels are stricter. Vitamins and minerals must each carry their own amount and a percentage of the Nutrient Reference Value, which is the official daily figure. Declared "other substances" like CoQ10 or a named bacterial strain must carry their own amount too. So on a UK label you will usually get real numbers for that whole group.
What you often will not get is a number for anything botanical. Greens, mushrooms, root extracts, berry extracts, seaweed, adaptogens. Those frequently appear only in the ingredient list, which is ordered by weight from most to least and gives no amounts at all.
Read the order instead: If the ingredient list is your only information, the order is the information. Whatever is listed first is the largest single component by weight. Whatever is in the last third is present in small amounts. If the mushroom on the front of the pouch turns up in the last quarter of the list, below the anti-caking agent, you have learned something real without learning a number.
The uncomfortable pattern worth naming: on many all-in-ones, the ingredients with disclosed amounts are the ones the law requires, and the ingredients the marketing leans on hardest are the ones without. That is not an accusation of dishonesty. It is a description of where the disclosure requirements happen to fall.
How to score it: Count how many of the ingredients on the front of the pack you can find an actual number for. That fraction is your answer to check 1, and it caps how far you can get with the rest of this guide.
Check 2: for the amounts you can see, do they match the studies?
An ingredient being present tells you nothing. The number next to it is the entire question.
For every ingredient that survived check 1, you are comparing 2 figures: the amount in one serving, and the amount used in the human trials on that ingredient. Those are often very far apart, and there is no rule that says a product has to close the gap.
Three outcomes, and all three are normal:
- At the studied amount. The label figure lands in the range the trials used. This is the only case where the research on that ingredient is actually about what you are holding.
- Below it. Present, correctly labelled, honestly described, and at a fraction of any amount anyone has tested. Common with the expensive ingredients. The trade calls this fairy dusting: enough to put the name on the front of the pack, not enough for the name to mean anything.
- Above it. Also common, particularly with the cheap water-soluble B vitamins, where 500% or 2,000% of the Nutrient Reference Value costs the manufacturer almost nothing and reads as generosity on a label. High is not automatically better and it is not automatically bad. It matters mainly for check 3.
Where to look up the numbers: Our ingredient reference pages carry the studied amounts, the forms that absorb well, and the timing for common vitamins and minerals. For anything not covered there, the trial figure is usually in the abstract of the paper rather than in a supplement brand's summary of it.
One trap: Percentages are not amounts. A label showing 525% of the Nutrient Reference Value for vitamin C is showing you a ratio to a legal reference figure, not a comparison to any study. Convert to milligrams before you compare anything to anything.
A second trap: Bacterial counts on a label are usually stated "at time of manufacture", not at the point you swallow it. That phrase is doing real work. It is the count when it left the factory, before shipping, shelf time and however long the pouch has been open in your kitchen.
Check 3: what does it duplicate, and does the total go too high?
This is where all-in-ones actually cause problems, and it is the check almost nobody runs.
Nothing you buy is aware of anything else you take. An all-in-one is designed on the assumption that it is your only supplement. If it is not, the nutrients that overlap add up, and they add up silently.
How to run it: Write out every supplement you currently take with its amount. Put the all-in-one next to them. For each nutrient that appears in more than one product, add the amounts together. Then compare each total to the amount the Department of Health and Social Care advises not to go past from supplements.
A few of those UK figures, taken from the NHS vitamins and minerals pages:
- Vitamin B6: do not take more than 10mg a day from supplements unless a doctor advises it
- Zinc: do not take more than 25mg a day from supplements unless a doctor advises it
- Selenium: 350 micrograms a day or less from supplements is unlikely to cause harm
- Magnesium: 400mg a day or less from supplements is unlikely to cause harm
- Manganese: 4mg a day or less for most people, and 0.5mg or less for older people
- Beta-carotene: no more than 7mg a day, and people who smoke are advised not to take beta-carotene supplements at all
Now take that B6 line and say your daily scoop contains 5mg. On its own, fine. Added to a B-complex, you can be over the guidance figure without any single product on your shelf looking unusual. That is the whole failure mode in one example, and it is why the arithmetic matters more than any individual label.
Read the caution text as data: UK labels carry a caution box that most people skip. Sometimes it tells you the manufacturer has already worked out that overlap is likely, for example by asking you not to take other supplements containing a specific mineral alongside it. That sentence is a fact about the product, and it is the manufacturer telling you to run check 3.
Watch for ingredients that interact with medicines: Vitamin K and blood thinners is the standard one. So are St John's wort, high-dose vitamin E, and anything with a documented effect on how a drug is absorbed. If you take prescribed medication, this check is the one to do properly rather than quickly, and it is worth checking with a pharmacist rather than a website. Ours included.

Check 4: cost per ingredient that passed, not cost per scoop
Every all-in-one is sold on the same arithmetic. Buying these 30 things separately would cost more than one scoop, so the scoop is good value. That comparison is true and it is also the wrong comparison, because it counts every ingredient in the pouch as something you would otherwise have bought.
Do it the other way round. You already have your list from checks 1 to 3. Cross off every ingredient that failed one of them: no disclosed amount, or an amount well below what the research used, or something you were already buying anyway.
Now divide the monthly price by whatever is left.
That figure is the honest cost, because what survived is the part you are actually paying for. Sometimes it is fine. A product at £40 a month that delivers 8 things at studied amounts that you would otherwise buy separately is doing real work. Sometimes the same arithmetic gives you 2 or 3 surviving ingredients and a number that would buy those 3 individually several times over.
Check the comparison they published: Most brands footnote the methodology behind their own price comparison, usually in small print at the bottom of the product page. Read it. It will tell you which products they compared against, at what date, and whether they adjusted for the fact that the comparison products often contain more per serving than they do. That footnote is frequently more informative than the headline saving.
Count the whole system, not the hero product: If the brand sells a separate vitamin D, a separate omega-3, or a separate evening formula and recommends taking them alongside, the monthly cost of the routine is all of those added together, not the price of the pouch. Compare like for like.
And check the price you will actually pay: Introductory pricing, first-order bundles and free gifts apply once. The subscription price is what you pay every month after that, and the one-off price is usually higher again. Use the number you will be paying in month 4.
Check 5: what does it replace?
The first 4 checks all push in the same direction, which is to unbundle. For a lot of people that is the wrong answer, and a guide that only ran the first 4 checks would be dishonest.
Here is the case for the bundle, stated properly. A supplement you do not take does nothing. Adherence is not a soft factor you subtract from the analysis, it is the entire mechanism by which any of this works. A routine that needs 6 separate decisions before 8am is one most people abandon inside a month. One scoop in a glass of water is a routine people keep for years.
So the last check is honest bookkeeping about your own behaviour.
Ask it precisely: What was I taking consistently before, and what will I actually take consistently after? Not what I own. Not what I meant to take. What I actually swallowed on a normal Tuesday.
If the answer is that you were taking almost nothing and this replaces almost nothing, then the convenience premium is buying you a real change, and the per-ingredient arithmetic in check 4 is not the whole story.
If the answer is that you already take 8 things reliably every morning, the all-in-one is not buying you convenience. It is buying you a second copy of things you already have, and check 3 becomes the important one instead.
The version of this that catches people out: an all-in-one replaces the products it contains. It does not replace the products it leaves out. Several popular ones contain no vitamin D, no omega-3 and no iron. In the UK, government advice is that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter. If a product marketed as your foundation does not contain the one thing the government suggests everyone consider, that is a separate purchase, and it belongs in the check 4 arithmetic.
The 10-minute version
If you only do one pass, do this one. You need 2 things: the label, and a list of everything you already take. Writing that list out is the step people skip, and it is the one that makes checks 3 and 5 work at all.
- Count how many ingredients on the front of the pack have an actual amount on the back. Note the fraction.
- Pick the 3 ingredients you are personally buying this for. Look up what the studies used. Compare.
- Add every overlapping nutrient across everything you take. Check the totals against the UK guidance amounts.
- Take the monthly price. Divide it by the number of ingredients that survived the first 3 steps.
- Ask what you were genuinely taking before, and what you will genuinely take after.
You will not get a yes or a no out of that. You get something more useful: a list of the things you are paying for, and a list of the things you are guessing about. Buying it anyway is a completely reasonable decision once you know which is which.
What we do not think you should conclude: that all-in-ones are a scam. Some are well-made, third-party tested for contamination, and genuinely convenient. The category's problem is structural rather than moral. The format hides the amount, and the amount is what determines whether any supplement does anything. A product can be entirely truthful and still leave you unable to answer the only question that matters.
What this guide deliberately does not do
It does not tell you what any ingredient does for any health condition, and it does not tell you that you have a nutrient gap. A web page cannot know either of those about you. Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet, and if you take prescribed medication or you are pregnant, the person to check with is a pharmacist or your GP rather than any website.
